Exploring Design

Design is what we do when we don’t know what to do next.

Neither science nor art, design is creative rationality and rational creativity. Designing balances the forces we cannot control and the needs we are driven to fulfill.

Everyone designs, but professionals benefit from an education and experience.

Some design knowledge is universal. A true designer is unconstrained by the limits of discipline and field.

Designing needn’t be subjective and ineffable; it can be just as robust as scientific reasoning, and can be studied as any other phenomenon.

Design can refer to an artifact, an activity, or a discipline. My interest is in the activity; that’s why I call it designing.
